DitherInk

About DitherInk

DitherInk is a free online tool for people who build things with e-paper displays: photo frames, weather stations, dashboards, badges and signs. It turns an ordinary photo into a file your microcontroller or single-board computer can send straight to the panel.

Why it exists

Showing a photo on e-paper takes more steps than it should: resize to the exact resolution, reduce to a palette of two to seven colors, dither so gradients survive, pack the pixels into the byte layout the controller expects and convert the result to a C array. Most existing tools only handle black and white or leave the byte layout to you. DitherInk handles the whole chain for black and white, grayscale, 3-color, 4-color, 6-color and 7-color panels.

How it works

  • Cropping, rotation and resizing happen in your browser.
  • The resized image is sent to our server, which applies tone adjustments, dithers it with a tunedAtkinson algorithm and encodes the file you choose.
  • Images are processed in memory and discarded immediately. Nothing is stored. See the privacy policy.

Free, supported by ads

DitherInk is free to use and supported by advertising. Ads are kept away from the upload and download controls so they never get in the way of the tool.
